Hefny Hamed, El-Metwaly, Egypt

Hefny Hamed El-Metwaly is a long-standing biodynamic farmer from the Tamiya area in Fayoum Governorate. He manages El-Metwaly Farm, a 30-feddan property that has been in his family for generations. With four children, Hefny has worked to pass on not only the land but also the values and practices of sustainable agriculture to the next generation.

“Our relationship with the company began more than 35 years ago with my father,” he explains. “I continued in his footsteps, and now I am doing the same with my sons.”

Convincing young people to work in agriculture is not easy, but Hefny has taken a patient and practical approach. He introduced his sons to biodynamic methods and involved them directly in the farming process. Over time, they began to take interest and pride in the work—often arriving at the farm before him to ensure that biodynamic practices are correctly followed.

El-Metwaly Farm was certified by Demeter in 2018 and joined the Economy of Love certification system in 2021. For Hefny, these certifications are not only a mark of quality but a reflection of his deep commitment to producing clean, safe food while protecting the environment.

“Biodynamic agriculture benefits us and our neighbors,” he says. “We know the product is healthy, and we are also protecting the land and the people around us from pollution.”

Hefny values the continuous support provided through Economy of Love. With dedicated regional engineers offering regular supervision and problem-solving, he feels that farmers are not left alone in their efforts.

“Through this system, we are part of a larger circle—farmers, companies, and consumers are connected. We learn from each other and support one another.”
